Time, Women, Pyramid, wood sculpture, 2023
Time, Women, Pyramid is one of Donghui’s most recent wood sculptures. The artist was inspired by minimalism and try to create a space that traps something with minimal materials and meanwhile introduce the elements of time and female body. She uses three pieces of 40 inches wood panels attached with fine blue yarn and forms them into a pyramid shape. A piece of orange coloured tampon hangs from the triangle top of the sculpture. The stability of the whole structure relies on friction between the wood and the triangle top’s notch. During the creative process, the artist drills 78 holes in each wood panel and repeatedly threads them through the holes between each panel until the yarn has enough friction to hold the panels together. Then she attached a piece of coloured tampon in the middle. Females are given the power of breeding and continue the life of humanity, and yet we feel embarrassed if our period blood leaks on our pants in public. Lots of people on earth to this day still consider period as something sinful or embarrassing and trying to hide or avoid the fact that female period exists. There’s still women that can’t even afford tampons or period pads around the world. This sculpture revisits multiple triangles that represents the bonding, stability and mutual supports between the female bodies, nature and modern society.
